2026 Spring Bag Trends: An Elegant Collision of Vintage and Modern Styles

This season, several major brands released new designer collections, highlighting the spring 2026 bag trends. “I’m interested in the quality of time and things that people value,” said Mathieu Blasi, describing his new interpretation of the iconic Chanel 2.55 bag. These wire-reinforced bags can be freely bent, creating a twisted and distressed effect. The new models debuted at his show.
Unsurprisingly, drawing inspiration from accessory archives is a common theme among emerging designers: at Balenciaga, Pierpaolo Piccioli updated the Le City bag; Jonathan Anderson redesigned the Lady Dior; and at Celine, Michael Ryder reimagined Phoebe Philo’s Phantom bag, adding a curved zipper to better reflect its nickname, the “smiley bag.”1
Anderson’s Lady Dior bag, featuring the angular top handle he used in his first collection for the brand, is one of many new “feminine” bags to grace the runways. With a sleek silhouette and inspired by purses of the 1940s and ’50s, these top-handle bags with understated hardware breathe new life into the classic handbag.
Chain bags have become another major trend in the world of handbags, appearing on the runways of Chloé, Ferragamo, Stella McCartney, Valentino, Givenchy, and Chanel. Of course, Chanel itself is associated with chains, and this season the chain element has expanded beyond bags, even extending to shirt hems thanks to a collaboration with Charvet.
At other shows, Prada perfectly embodied the idea that “good things are often small and exquisite,” stealing the show with drawstring trench bags in marigold, lilac, and pink. (Green and brown tones were particularly popular during Fashion Week, worn by buyers Yumi Shin and Marta Oldrini, editor-in-chief of Italian Vogue.) Milan’s Prada wasn’t the only one to embrace the style: elegant drawstring trench bags also appeared at Loewe—presented in an updated flamenco style—while Miu Miu, Celine, and Valentino also reintroduced the bag design.
When it comes to color, cobalt blue is definitely a shade to keep an eye on: we saw it on bags during Fashion Week; fashion icon Ramya Giangola was one of the first to show off a Celine drawstring bag. (The bold hue also made a splash on the red carpet: Chase Infinity wore a voluminous Louis Vuitton gown to the Series Mania film festival in Lille, France, and Meryl Streep wore a silk Saint Laurent coat-dress to the premiere of The Devil Wears Prada 2 in Shanghai, China.)2
Also worth noting this season are the casual hobo bags from Altuzarra, Kallmeyer, and Toteme (last year, Prada’s bucket bag was a favorite of stylist Kate Young), as well as a range of sophisticated mesh bags from Tory Burch, Bottega Veneta, and Erdem—all offering a chic alternative to the raffia bags often seen in summer.
Below, we’ll detail the hottest bag trends for spring 2026. As summer approaches, we’ll update this information based on current weather conditions to determine which styles will lead the pack.
In 2025, “feminine” style became the fashion paradigm, embodied in dainty gloves, elegant knee-length dresses, and pumps. Meanwhile, “feminine” bags evoked the classic tote bags of the 1940s and ’50s, with their structured shapes and striking clasps. In 2025, designers presented new interpretations, combining old and new elements. Some designers retained classic silhouettes: for example, Miuccia Prada released a traditional tote bag with a crocodile-embossed pattern at Prada; while at Miu Miu, she gave the bag a looser silhouette and added practical pockets. Louise Trotter updated iconic woven leather models (such as Veneta), introducing new shapes, such as the Barbara. At Loewe, Jack McCollough and Lazaro Hernandez have similarly expanded their traditional accessories collections, releasing new laptop-sized top-handle bags that easily unzip to reveal a monogrammed interior.3
In spring 2026, exquisite bags often hide behind their compact size. On the Prada runway, drawstring trench coats in bright yellow, pale purple, and pastel shades took center stage. Besides Prada, bags also appeared on the Loewe runway—in a flamenco-inspired interpretation—and at Miu Miu and Valentino, with Valentino’s beaded bags causing quite a stir. For shoppers looking to buy a bag now, there’s a wide selection, from delicate satin models by Staud to impeccable teardrop-shaped bags by Sophie Buhai.
While leather shoulder bags are certainly versatile, nothing elevates an everyday look quite like a subtly elegant clutch. At the Chanel Spring/Summer 2026 fashion show, a deep burgundy clutch was undoubtedly the center of attention; and at Khaite, the Audrey clutch, embellished with crocodile details and presented in a vibrant red, provided a striking contrast to the predominantly black collection. Furthermore, Bottega Veneta and Celine both released clutches suitable for everyday use: a soft, creamy white Celine clutch paired perfectly with casual trousers and a matching, oversized belted coat. Oversized clutches are also popular with street style icons, who carry these pillow-like bags on their arms, proving that “clutches aren’t just for evening events anymore.”
Every season brings a new, vibrant trend color, and for spring 2026, cobalt blue is undoubtedly the center of attention. While the color of fall 2025 was festive red, this season’s visual impact is taken to the next level with a bold, rich, and unforgettable cobalt blue. This vibrant hue is everywhere, from elegant Celine clutches to Loewe bucket bags. While softer pastels were popular in previous seasons, this year’s cobalt blue feels brighter and more energetic.
Bowling bag, medical bag, East-meets-West tote—whatever you call this sculptural bag shape, its influence on fashion trends is undeniable. For spring 2026, this bag style showcases its unique charm with graceful architectural curves and crescent-shaped handles. Examples include Balenciaga’s Bolero bowling bag, Miu Miu’s leather Beau bag, and The Row’s coveted Astra tote. This trend isn’t limited to luxury brands—contemporary labels like Staud and Liffner have also released bowling bags. Furthermore, Chloé released an early 2000s-inspired bowling bag with a jingling chain, cementing the bag’s status as a wardrobe must-have for the modern fashionista.4
When a creative director takes over a new brand, they often look to the brand’s archives for inspiration, developing a fresh design concept that reflects their era. However, they are often reluctant to make too many changes to classic models. Mathieu Blasi breathed new life into the Chanel 2.55 flap bag, preserving the iconic quilted pattern and chain shoulder strap, while infusing it with structured wire, creating the impression of a timeless moment. At Balenciaga, Pierpaolo Piccioli introduced the new Le City bag; at Celine, Michael Ryder revived the iconic Phantom bag, beloved by fashionistas of the new millennium; and Jonathan Anderson added a contemporary twist to the classic Lady Dior bag. As the saying goes: if it ain’t broke, don’t change it.
Few summer bags are as versatile as mesh bags—a must-have for farmers markets, the perfect beach companion, and a versatile weekend pick. On the runway, designers favored woven bags: Tory Burch presented a woven mesh bag with chain detailing, Bottega Veneta created a minimalist black leather bucket bag, Ulla Johnson showcased vibrant colors with a rainbow woven leather bag, and Erdem added a playful touch with sequins. The following recommendations are also suitable for everyday use: from the Staud bucket bag to the cotton version of the Calella tote from the collaboration between Spanish brand Hereu and French mesh bag maker Filt—all are irresistible.
How to describe this season’s most coveted new items? Perfectly rebellious. From Chanel and Valentino to Dior and Loewe, tote bags have become even more effortlessly chic—crafted from soft distressed leather and delicate suede, with zippers intentionally left half-open. This effect, simultaneously thoughtful and casual, perfectly captures the current fashion trend: effortless cool, sophisticated without being pretentious. Consider this effortless tote bag a trend endorsed by both Jonathan Anderson and Mathieu Blasi.
For busy modern women, roomy tote bags (even larger than shoulder bags!) are the perfect choice, combining style and practicality. From Toteme to Stella McCartney and Kallmeyer, designers boldly upsized bags this season. Celine reimagined their beloved travel tote, transforming it into a larger version, while Altuzarra made its elegant crossbody bag so striking that it almost overshadowed all other styles. Practicality is, of course, paramount—after all, these collections were designed with modern life in mind—so it’s no surprise that roomy tote bags are making a frequent appearance on the runway. Whether for the daily commute or a weekend getaway, bags like the roomy crossbody bag from Saint Laurent or the oversized leather tote from Madewell provide convenient and comfortable travel.
The popularity of chain bags has fluctuated over the years. While Chanel’s chain bag remained a key design element for nearly a century, the heyday of “understated luxury” has given way to minimalist or even completely metal-free styles. The Spring/Summer 2026 collections are seeing a strong comeback, with new chain bag styles spanning a variety of styles for both day and evening wear. Chloé’s pleated leather chain bag can be worn over the shoulder; Ferragamo presents an orange textured clutch with a chain crafted from the iconic interlocking Gancini logo; and Givenchy’s Sarah Burton embellishes tubular bags with chain handles adorned with charms.
